Berbeda dengan banyak penghargaan musik Korea Selatan lainnya, yang biasanya menggunakan angka penjualan sebagai kriteria utama dalam menentukan pemenang setiap tahun, Penghargaan Musik Korea berfokus pada pencapaian musik sebagai kriteria utamanya. Korean Music Awards juga lebih mementingkan album dan lagu itu sendiri.
